Sacked ex-Premier League boss, 42, close to managerial return after worst ever start to season and farcical team talk

RUBEN SELLES is set to land his third job of the year after lasting a combined 34 games at Hull City and Sheffield United.

According to reports, Selles, 42, will return to his homeland of Spain to coach Real Zaragoza after moving to England in January 2022.

Selles was last in charge at Bramall Lane but was embarrassingly replaced by Chris Wilder just two months on from taking over from the Yorkshireman in the first place.

Having come through at Southampton as assistant coach, Selles has had six separate stints at managing – although two of them were for a single game at St Mary’s as caretaker.

He went on to get the gig full time in February 2023 but could only oversee Saints’ eventual relegation before he took on the Reading job later that year.

Selles was in place at Hull for less than six months before his pitiful six game losing tenure at Sheffield United.

After a tough time of things, the Spaniard is now closing in on a move to second division outfit Real Zaragoza.

The former La Liga side have fallen from grace and are now over a decade since their last top flight match.

With six defeats from 10 league games this season, and just the one win, Zaragoza sacked Atletico Madrid stalwart Gabi last week.

Their search appears to have led them to Selles, with Spanish outlet El Periodico de Aragon claiming that negotiations for his appointment have intensified.

Zaragoza initially turned to Emilio Larraz as Gabi’s replacement but he was battered 5-0 at the weekend and Selles’ name has now cropped up.

It is claimed that Larraz could be made reserve team manager instead.

Selles, if confirmed, will hope not to need another on-pitch team talk. He was left to dress down his Blades players earlier this season after defeat against Bristol City at home on the Championship’s opening day.

Following the game, Selles stormed onto the field and conducted his debrief in front of the angry supporters and disappointed players.
