Wind, rainfall warnings issued for B.C.’s central and north coast

Wind and rainfall warnings have been issued for B.C.’s central and north coast as autumn storm season begins.
Environment Canada says strong winds and heavy rain are expected along the Central Coast, as well as Haida Gwaii and northern Vancouver Island Wednesday through Thursday. About 100 millimetres of rain is forecast, along with winds gusting to 110 km/h.
The weather agency is reminding travellers that heavy rain can cause flash flooding, and is warning of possible washouts near rivers and creeks. It says high winds may result in power outages.
Warnings like this are the reason the province is urging British Columbians to prepare for heavier rain and strong winds.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the province said it is encouraging people to keep storm drains clear to reduce localized flooding, and be ready for potential power outages.
It said everyone should have a household emergency plan and an emergency kit that contains things like clean water, a battery-powered flashlight, medications and first aid supplies.
As of Wednesday morning, there are no high streamflow advisories or flood warnings for waterways anywhere in British Columbia but, as the province notes in its media release, conditions can change quickly.
