BC Hydro warns public to stay clear as Comox Dam spill increases ahead of heavy rain

BC Hydro is advising the public that late Wednesday evening, the spill from the Comox Dam will be increased, raising Puntledge River levels, in preparation for heavy rains Thursday and Friday.

Karla Louwers, public affairs co-ordinator for BC Hydro said in a release the spill will increase from about 40 m3/s to approximately 100 m3/s.

They are advising the public to stay away from the higher flows along all sections of the Puntledge River through end of day Monday (Oct. 27).

BC Hydro noted operations are guided by the short-term inflow forecast and current reservoir levels. Heavy inflows are expected Thursday into Friday and are expected to remain above normal into next week.

The added while there is still some uncertainty in the forecast, and water release from the Comox Dam may be adjusted to be in the 50 m3/s to 100 m3/s depending on actual inflows. However, flows are expected to remain high and dangerous through end of day Monday.  

Temporary danger safety signage advising of the higher river flows will be in place along the river Wednesday.
