Dyson Daniels agrees to four-year, $100M extension with Hawks

One of the best defensive players in the NBA is sticking around in Atlanta.

Dyson Daniels has agreed to a four-year, $100 million contract extension with the Hawks, the team announced Monday.

ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the financial terms of the deal.

Daniels was set to become a restricted free agent after this season.

“We are beyond thrilled to reach a long-term deal with Dyson, and we are excited to watch him continue to grow with our group,” Hawks general manager Onsi Saleh said in a press release. “This extension reflects our belief in him today and into the future.”

The 22-year-old had a breakout season in his first year with the Hawks, averaging 14.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists and a league-leading three steals per game. His 229 total steals were the most since Gary Payton in the 1995-96 season.

His shooting also saw a marked improvement, rising to 49.3 per cent from the field and 34 per cent from deep.

In tandem with his breakout year, Daniels was named the NBA’s most improved player, finished second in defensive player of the year voting and was named to the league’s all-defensive first team.

Originally drafted by the Pelicans eighth overall in 2022, Daniels was traded to Atlanta as part of the deal that sent Dejounte Murray to New Orleans last off-season.

The Hawks finished 40-42 last season — good for eighth in the Eastern Conference — but failed to make the playoffs after losing to Orlando and Miami in the Play-In Tournament.
