Indian opener Pratika Rawal came close to becoming the fastest cricketer in the world to surpass 1,000 runs in Women’s ODIs on Sunday.

By scoring 18 runs in the group stage match against England in Indore, she could have achieved the milestone in only her 22nd innings, breaking former Australian cricketer, the late Lindsay Reeler’s record of 23, which has stood for 37 years since December 18, 1988. However, she got out for just six runs in 14 balls, going loosely after a short-and-wide ball, only to bottom-edge it to the wicketkeeper for a caught behind.

India next play against New Zealand on October 23, and the right-hander has a chance to equal Reeler’s record. If she manages 12 runs in that game, she’d at least break Deepti Sharma’s record (29) and become the fastest Indian to go past the 1000-run mark.

Earlier in the year, Rawal beat the record of current England head coach Charlotte Edwards to become the fastest to 500 runs in Women’s ODIs when she scored 78 runs from 91 balls against South Africa during the second match of a tri-nation series in Sri Lanka. It was her eighth innings, and beating Edwards’ record of nine.

In the first innings in Indore, Heather Knight starred with a brilliant 109 in her 300th international game, guiding England to 288/8. Her 91-ball innings included 15 boundaries and a six, stringing a 113-run partnership with captain Nat Sciver-Brunt (38).

India fought back strongly, led by off-spinner Deepti Sharma, who claimed 4/51 — her best World Cup figures — including Tammy Beaumont (22) and Amy Jones (56). Key fielding moments, like Sneh Rana’s run-out of Knight and Harmanpreet Kaur’s catch to dismiss Sciver-Brunt, triggered a collapse, with England losing five wickets in the final 10 overs.
