When will Omarion Hampton return? Injury update, timeline for Chargers RB

Top teams to watch ahead of the 2025 NFL trade deadline
USA TODAY Sports’ Joe Rivera and Chris Bumbaca break down which teams to keep an eye out for ahead of the November 4th NFL trade deadline.
The Hampton Inn has been closed for weeks, but a grand reopening could be on the horizon.
It has been a difficult month-plus for Los Angeles Chargers running backs, who lost Najee Harris to a torn Achilles at the end of September. October hasn’t been much better as the injury bug took a bite out of the rookie, Omarion Hampton.
He hasn’t been seen on the field since being spotted in a walking boot following the team’s Week 5 loss to the Washington Commanders.
As the trade deadline nears, there is plenty of intrigue surrounding the Chargers’ backfield – especially related to Hampton’s eventual return.
Here’s a look at when the rookie could get back into game action.
When will Omarion Hampton return?
Hampton is out until at least Week 10 with an ankle injury.
The running back was placed on injured reserve following Week 5, requiring him to be sidelined for at least four games.
It has been a tough stretch for the Chargers after a fast start to the season. They already lost Najee Harris for the season with a torn Achilles, which forced Hampton to take on a larger workload.
The rookie lasted just one full game before the ankle injury occurred, leaving a thin depth chart in the backfield.
With the trade deadline fast-approaching, it remains to be seen whether Los Angeles decides to swing a deal for additional running back help.
Chargers RB depth chart
Depth has become a problem for the once-deep Chargers’ running back room. Vidal has stepped up to become the RB1 in Hampton’s absence, sharing the backfield with Haskins.
Even with those injuries, Jim Harbaugh’s team has been capable of running the ball without their top two backs. They rushed for 140 yards against the Miami Dolphins, but only 54 against the Indianapolis Colts in a game that had a negative game script almost from the start.
