Minnesota Vikings at LA Chargers preview

Thursday Night Football games are often difficult to predict, and that has proved to be the case over the past three weeks, with San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants and Cincinnati Bengals all winning as considerable underdogs.

This week, Minnesota Vikings travel to SoFi Stadium to face Los Angeles Chargers in another hard-to-call clash between two unfamiliar sides who last met in Week Three of the 2023 season. Both are coming off Week Seven defeats.

From a coaching perspective, this looks an evenly matched battle. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh’s prowess is well known, and his teams are recognised for their tough, hard-hitting style, while Minnesota’s Kevin O’Connell is regarded as one of the NFL’s best young minds.

The most significant difference between the Chargers and Vikings is their health.

The Chargers are in the midst of an injury crisis, with key players such as left tackle Joe Alt and linebacker Khalil Mack missing multiple games, and their running back room has been decimated.

In last week’s defeat to the Indianapolis Colts, a makeshift ground attack managed just 54 rushing yards, forcing quarterback Justin Herbert to throw 55 times in a 38-24 loss.

The Vikings, who fell 28-22 in a tight contest against the Eagles on Sunday, have had their share of injuries too, but they are in a better overall position and possess more depth than their opponents.

Veteran quarterback Carson Wentz has been solid in his three starts this season, and O’Connell still has game-changing star power on both offence and defence, suggesting the visitors can push LA all the way.
