Dodgers reporters under fire for body-shaming comments about Toronto Blue Jays’ Guerrero and Kirk

One would think that anybody who regularly covers the MLB would know who Toronto Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk is.

The 26-year-old made his MLB debut in 2020 and has played a big role for the Blue Jays since 2022. He’s been named an All Star in both 2022 and 2025 and received a Silver Slugger Award in 2022. If that weren’t enough, he was also named a Gold Glove finalist this season.

Despite his impressive career to date, however, he was seriously slighted by ESPN’s Bill Plaschke recently. Plaschke, who also writes for the Los Angeles Times, recently admitted in a World Series preview that he wasn’t aware of who Kirk was.

“They’re the most anonymous team in all of sports. I don’t know anybody who could name you their lineup,” Plaschke said. “Who’s their catcher?”

After being reminded by his co-hosts that the Jays’ catcher is Kirk, he followed it up with, “Ya, he’s not exactly a hulking presence.”

What made the entire conversation all the more jaw-dropping was when one of the hosts, Jack Harris, a beat writer for the Dodgers, took a shot at Kirk’s physique, saying, “Well, he’s hulking in some sense.”

They weren’t done there, either. Plaschke went on to say the whole team bores him before being reminded of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who’s hitting .442 with six home runs in the postseason.

“No, I like fatty Vladdy, I like him,” Plasche said to the amusement of Harris and another Los Angeles Times columnist, Dylan Hernandez.

Overall, it’s a pretty shocking preview, and one that Blue Jays fans have been none too pleased with. Even some LA Dodgers fans hopped on X to voice their disapproval of what was said.

This is certainly bulletin board material for the Blue Jays and their fan base. They will certainly be hoping to get the last laugh with a World Series victory over the reigning champion Dodgers.

Daily Hive has reached out to the Los Angeles Times, and will update the story if/when a comment is given.
