Stephen Fry breaks silence on Celebrity Traitors exit after dropping huge ‘clue’ he knew more

The 68-year-old actor has become the fifth faithful to be banished at the Round Table following another dramatic episode

Sir Stephen Fry has spoken out for the first time since he became the latest contestant to exit The Celebrity Traitors – and spark confusion that he knew more than is usually allowed.

The 68-year-old actor has become the fifth faithful to be banished at the Round Table following another dramatic episode on Thursday (October 23) night.

Scottish TV star Mark Bonnar was also banished by the group following separate roundtable discussions where players quibbled over who they thought could be a traitor.

But despite his exit. Stephen admits that he still relished his time on the show. He told the BBC: “It’s a word that’s overused as people give them as Christmas presents, but it really was an experience.

“A remarkable experience. And of course, it’s shaped by the rules of the game. No question, the structure of the rules of the game gives it its shape. And I was familiar with those from watching it, but it is formed more, in a way, by the nature of the group who are participating.

“That was just wonderful to get to know some extraordinary people I would probably otherwise never have met. And some people, of course, whom I knew, that made it very rich and interesting. Every day was astonishing.”

Stephen also says he enjoyed getting to know some of his co-stars. Asked if he had any personal highlights from the show, Stephen explained: “It’s the individual relationships really.

“Wonderful conversations with David Olusoga, with Clare Balding, both of whom I knew anyway, but hadn’t really had any profound relationship with as it were so time in the game has given us that.

“Wonderful to meet people I didn’t know. Joe Marler, Cat Burns, Tameka Empson – of totally different fields and worlds of things so it was lovely to get to know them.”

He went on: “I suppose really, the thing is, when you’re a child, from all the way from earliest childhood, you’re used to being in groups. You’re in a play group before you go to a kindergarten, and at school you’re again in groups.

“Groups can be bad, because there’s popularity, and the pecking order sometimes but humans are group animals, social animals. Then, when you’re a student, you still have groups, and you go to pubs together, you go on holidays together, and you live in houses together when you first afford to live somewhere in a group.

“And then eventually you start – just as the super group of all time, The Beatles – you start pairing off, and the group disappears.”

It came as fans were left confused by Stephen’s comments after the 68-year-old revealed there were three traitors among them – a detail not actually revealed to the faithfuls.

Host Claudia Winkleman picked Jonathan Ross, Alan Carr and Cat Burns to be the traitors on day one and they’ve been picking off the faithfuls one by one – quite successfully – ever since.

But during one of the roundtables, Cat was put on the spot to tell the others who she thinks are the traitor are. She looked at Stephen and said: “I think it’s kind of between you and Jonathan…” But Stephen jumped in and hit back: “No it’s not between us,” before adding: “You do know there’s three.”

And the comment didn’t go unnoticed by Celebrity Traitors viewers – even if it did by Stephen’s fellow players. @joshualawlor said: “How does Stephen know there are three traitors? Or was he trying to catch Cat out? #CelebrityTraitors.”

@haimlesbian commented: “Why has nobody pointed out stephen has said there are three traitors so confidently twice now? i would be gagging him at the roundtable with that #celebritytraitors.”@TNCargill echoed: “When Cat said to Stephen ‘it’s between you and jonathan’, why did no-one pick up stephen saying ‘there are three of them’ how would he know? #CelebrityTraitors.”

@ihatedozens posted: “Stephen picking up on the fact that traitors sleep less and cat frequently doses off was crazy work omg #TheCelebrityTraitors.” @Luke_N_Griffin added: “Stephen Fry mentioning all three Traitors in 5 minutes and then being banished feels awful. If the Traitors don’t win, I’ll be surprised #CelebrityTraitors.”
