Penn State football gets a bye week at a much-needed time.

The Nittany Lions have had a whirlwind month, climbing as high as No. 2 in the Sept. 21 edition of the US LBM Coaches Poll before falling to No. 5 Oregon in double overtime — the first of four consecutive games that also included defeats to unranked UCLA, Northwestern and Iowa.

Penn State, led by interim coach Terry Smith, is hoping to use the bye week to rally and end the season on a high note. At 3-4 on the season, the Nittany Lions must win three of their five remaining games to reach bowl eligibility — a far cry from the team’s preseason No. 3 ranking.

Does Penn State football play today?

Penn State is off in Week 9 of the college football season, with the bye week serving as its second and final off week of the year. The first bye of the year was in Week 4, ahead of the Nittany Lions’ home game vs. Oregon.

The Nittany Lions receive the off week prior to consecutive games against the top two teams of the Coaches Poll. They travel first to play top-ranked Ohio State on Nov. 1 before returning home to play No. 2 Indiana on Nov. 8.
