BBC viewers can’t get enough of a “hidden gem” drama starring a Derry Girls legend on iPlayer. Fans have been raving about Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue which is a British series created and written by Anthony Horowitz.

The show first premiered back in March of this year but is now available to watch on iPlayer. The summary on the steaming app reads: “Ten passports, nine bodies, one mystery. They may have survived a plane crash – but will they survive the jungle?”

The drama follows nine strangers who are marooned in a Mexican jungle after a plane crash. However, when they all start dying one by one, they have to solve the mystery of who is killing them off.

As the story unfolds in flashback, viewers will meet the survivors as they battle to stay alive against the heat, a shortage of supplies and each other.

Viewers have been loving the show, with plenty taking to social media to talk about the drama. One person wrote on X: “Nine bodies in a Mexican morgue is actually really good. Siobhán McSweeney was fab. Go watch it.”

Another asked: “Has anyone got into ‘Nine bodies in a Mexican morgue’ on @BBCiPlayer? Up to episode three and can’t work out if it’s meant to be a comedy or serious drama. But I’m hooked either way.”

“Don’t bother with the Guinness rubbish – ⁦@AnthonyHorowitz⁩ Agatha Christie style murder mystery Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue is the biz,” a third said.

A fourth commented: “Currently hooked on nine bodies in a Mexican morgue, what a little banger this show is.” Derry Girls star Siobhán McSweeney stars in the programme as Lisa Davies who is a former hospice nurse and co-owner of a motel chain with her husband Travis.

The actress is best known for her role as Sister Michael in the sitcom Derry Girls which earned her a BAFTA Award. Siobhan, 45, said the whole project had been a departure from the norm for her.

“It’s the first time, apart from theatre, that I’ve played an American, so the accent was a challenge,” she admitted. “Another challenge would be one that’s the same with every show, where you’re going to spend an awful lot of time with these people and you worry if you are all going to get on. It turned out to be one of the most joyful jobs I’ve ever been on.”

The star admitted that despite taking on the role, she doesn’t think that she would be able to survive if she was in the same situation.

Siobhan said: “I’d be dead within two days! What really comes across, which is something that you never think about in these survival stories, is that you think they’re on the move but they’re not. They’re stuck in one area. They’re stuck beside the plane, so I guess I’d die of boredom.”

Despite the drama being set in Mexico, it was actually filmed in Gran Canaria. Writer Horowitz said he hoped that BBC viewers enjoyed the series.

“I’ve always believed that murder stories are popular because they’re about the search for truth. We live in a world in which it is very hard to be sure of anything anymore – we have 24-hour news, fake news, post-truth. How do you know what’s real any more? But whodunnits lead to absolute truth. It’s revealed at the end of the final episode,” he said.
