Leeds vs West Ham preview

West Ham are working Monday to Friday in the Premier League this week and manager Nuno Espirito Santo will demand a more professional performance from his side against Leeds at Elland Road.

Home is where the hurt is for the Hammers this season as Monday’s 2-0 loss to fellow strugglers Brentford made it four defeats out of four at the London Stadium.

A significant number of West Ham fans boycotted the match – the club declined to reveal the official attendance – so it was hardly an ideal home debut for Nuno.

‘Away advantage’ is not a concept you often hear about in sport but, given the toxic atmosphere at West Ham’s home games, they should be looking forward to Friday’s work trip to Leeds.

The hosts were hailed as one of the best teams in Championship history last season, when they pipped Burnley to the title with a tally of 100 points.

But Leeds are yet to take the Premier League by storm, sitting 16th in the table – six points behind playoff winners Sunderland – after eight matches.

The club’s owners reportedly considered sacking promotion-winning manager Daniel Farke in the summer due to concerns about his poor record in the top flight.

Last weekend’s 2-0 loss at Burnley, where Leeds dominated the shot count and possession but struggled to create clear chances, has increased the pressure on the German.

His side are odds-on to take advantage of West Ham’s woes and they have been solid at home this term, grinding out a 1-0 win over Everton and holding Newcastle to a 0-0 draw.

Highflying Bournemouth needed a late goal to draw 2-2 at Elland Road last month and Tottenham rode their luck in a 2-1 win on October 4.

But Leeds have failed to score from open play in five of their first eight games and West Ham look a big price with the draw no bet, having won 3-0 at Nuno’s Nottingham Forest and drawn 1-1 at Everton.

Rodon going under the radar in shots market

Leeds centre-back Joe Rodon has had seven shots in his last three Premier League appearances, including a goal in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.

Rodon has also been a consistent threat for Wales, scoring in two of their last three World Cup qualifiers, and West Ham have been far from secure defending set-pieces this term.

Back Bowen to inspire unhappy Hammers

If the Hammers are to stop the rot at Elland Road then Jarrod Bowen, the most accomplished finisher on either team, is likely to play a starring role.

The England international is particularly effective away from home, scoring at Nottingham Forest and Everton and firing in four shots in his side’s opening defeat at Sunderland.

Under 1.5 first-half goals

Just one of West Ham’s first eight Premier League matches produced over 1.5 first-half goals and Leeds have scored only twice before the break in four home games.

Anton Stach to have two or more shots

Leeds signed Stach primarily as a defensive midfielder but he averages 1.8 shots per game in the league and, at 6ft 4in, is an obvious aerial threat from set-pieces.

Jarrod Bowen to have one or more shots on target

West Ham’s key man has had eight shots on target in eight league games this season and has found the net on two of his last three away trips.
