Netflix is currently streaming a Liam Neeson thriller partly set in Belfast that’s been hailed as one of the Irish star’s finest movies in years.

Several other prominent Irish actors also feature in the period crime drama, including F1’s Kerry Condon and Game of Thrones and House of Guinness star Jack Gleeson.

Set in 1974, the thriller begins in Belfast during the Troubles where four members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army detonate a bomb that claims six lives.

Neeson plays Finbar Murphy, one of the bombers who’s desperate to abandon his violent past by relocating to the coastal town of Glencolmcille, County Donegal.

However, when he learns one of his former terrorist associates has resurfaced and is harming a local girl, Finbar must confront his history and choose whether to expose his real identity to safeguard his community, reports Belfast Live.

In the Land of Saints and Sinners was released back in 2023 and didn’t create much of a stir at the cinema.

Many Neeson enthusiasts regard it as one of his finest films in years, though, and it’s been granted a fresh opportunity now it’s broadly accessible to stream on Netflix.

One Letterboxd user declared the thriller is “surprisingly good” and “one of the best films Neeson’s done in years”.

They continued: “Some actual thought, care and effort was put into the story! I was fully engaged throughout the tight well paced runtime!

“A breathtaking location and cinematographer with the talent to capture it! Honestly gave me serious Banshees of Inisherin vibes! Hot take, I’d watch this again before I’d rewatch Banshees and I liked Banshees!”

They particularly lauded Condon’s performance as the film’s main villain Doireann McCann. “KERRY CONDON is the real standout!” they added.

“She’s fantastic as the primary antagonist! Really good at playing really bad! It’s a great role and she absolutely smashes it!”

Another viewer familiar with Neeson’s usual action films wrote: “I’m struggling to think of one that’s as good as 2023’s In the Land of Saints and Sinners.

“Even if you’ve been feeling burnt out on Liam Neeson’s brand of grizzled Dad Movies (and I’ve felt more than a little burnt out lately myself), give this one a shot.

“Neeson talks in a gravelly voice and fires a gun, just as you’d expect, but this time around there’s a lot more on offer.”

Another shared: “Welcome back Mr. Neeson. This is his best film since Taken.

“A taut, quiet, moving, often darkly funny neo western Irish thriller that packs the emotional weight of a life spent on the right side of a gun.”

And a final glowing review said: “It’s Patriot Games meets Banshees of Inisherin. It’s also Liam Neeson ‘s best movie in years.

“A thoughtful, slow-moving (in the best way) drama-actioner featuring great work from a ruthless Kerry Condon. Plus, Ciarán Hinds plays a lovable old cop who just wants to read a good book while gazing at the Irish countryside, so it’s worth seeing just for that.”

In the Land of Saints and Sinners is available to stream on Netflix.
