‘It’s a shining example’: Kent pub named 5th best in Britain

A Kent pub has been named among the top five best in the country, according to a new list published today.
The Radnor Arms, in Folkestone, has been ranked 5th in The Good Food Guide’s inaugural list of the 100 Best Pubs in Britain, which celebrates venues offering “proper food and proper beer”.

Since being taken over by owner Josh De Haan and the Pickled Egg Pub Company in 2019, the Radnor Arms has been transformed from a traditional pub and is now considered one of the South East’s most talked-about dining destinations.
Mr De Haan said: “This recognition means a great deal – not just for The Radnor Arms, but for Folkestone itself.
“I’m hugely proud of our team and grateful to our customers for their continued support.
“To be recognised nationally by The Good Food Guide is incredibly rewarding.
“The Radnor Arms is a shining example of what can be achieved with vision, dedication, and community spirit.”
The pub’s menu, created by head chef Niel Talan, combines bold flavours with pan-Asian influences, while general manager Ryan Hillier and his team have been praised for their warmth and professionalism.

The venue forms part of Mr De Haan’s wider Rocksalt Group, which also includes the seafront restaurant Rocksalt and Little Rock.
The honour marks the second accolade this month for the Pickled Egg Pub Company site, which was also rated Very Good following an anonymous inspection by the guide’s team.
Operations director Jack Nimmons added: “We are absolutely blown away by the support from our customers.
“Being recognised in The Good Food Guide and now receiving a spot in the UK’s Top 100 best pubs in Britain is a huge honour.
“This achievement is a direct result of the team’s passion and hard work.”
Top of this year’s list was The Highland Laddie in Leeds, while the Leicester Arms in Penshurst, near Tonbridge, also made the cut, coming in at number 91.

The Good Food Guide’s editor, Chloë Hamilton, said the rankings reflect the strength of Britain’s pub scene despite widespread closures, highlighting venues that “nail the drinking and dining side of the equation”.
“It turns out the harder you look, the more you find, and they’re not all hidden away in the Cotswolds,” she added.
To mark the milestone, the Radnor Arms will host a celebration event for residents and supporters on Friday, November 14, offering complimentary drinks and its signature flatbreads.
