Martin Kemp, the Spandau Ballet star, has been rushed to hospital following a distressing chainsaw accident that injured his hand. The 64 year old had his hand bandaged after the incident, which occurred when he picked up the chainsaw by the blade to cut a piece of wood.
The shocking event was revealed by Martin’s son, Roman Kemp, during an episode of the You About podcast. Roman shared that his father sent a photo of his bandaged hand with the simple message “Yep…. Chainsaw! ! !”, causing concern among the family.
Speaking to Tom Grennan, Roman, aged 32, said: “It’s scary. Friday night I’d just finished work and looked at my phone, and dad sent a picture of his hand with all fingers heavily strapped up.”
He added: “And all he writes underneath in the family WhatsApp group is ‘yep… chainsaw.'”
Roman went on to say: “I was texting him saying ‘what? !’ but got no reply, and then Harley my sister is like ‘what’s happened?’ but again, no reply.”
He continued: “So he said ‘Oh there was a bit of the branch that we wanted chopping down so I went and got a chainsaw.”
Roman added: “He’s 65. He’s got more than enough dough. Get a professional in, you can’t be doing that.”
He continued: “Do you know what he said?’I picked it up from the blade and it didn’t have the sheath on it’. He said it switched on…he’s picked it up and it’s kicked into gear.”
Roman concluded by saying that Martin was “lucky not to lose his hand”, adding: “I know a mate who lost a finger through that.”
Roman recounted how Martin “screamed” and collided with his wife Shirlie, blood spilling everywhere, leading to a hospital visit for a tetanus shot, reports the Mirror.
Tom humorously suggested that Shirlie might not be pleased if the injury prevented Martin from playing the guitar. Martin, who shares a close relationship with his son and 35 year old daughter Harley, recently spoke to the Mirror about the surreal experience of parenting adult children.
He shared: “My kids are now in their thirties, but I’ve got footage of them taking their first steps, and it’s mind-boggling when I watch it back.
“You miss them so much when they grow up. It’s weird, when I watch old videos of Roman I can even remember the way he would smell of milk as a baby. Both of my parents have passed on now, but I’ve got memories of them and it feels like I can still smell them when I see old clips. It’s priceless.
“We had a load of old tapes of the kids, and a few Christmases ago, Shirlie bought me a camera that can play them all. I hadn’t seen these tapes in years, so I was watching them back through this little lens on the camera with my eye up against it, crying my eyes out!”
