Unless this island is hit by a giant meteorite like that which caused the the extinction of the dinosaurs, Ireland is about to elect Catherine Connolly as President. If this horror story comes about, it would unquestionably be the worst presidency in this state’s history. Yes, Connolly seems to be the human equivalent of Dustin the Turkey, whose nomination for the Eurovision song contest revealed an utter contempt for the competition’s values. But for the electorate to express their anger at the political establishment through such feckless, reckless disregard for the iron rule of consequence is a measure of the cultural corruption that has eaten into the moral core of this republic.
If elected, Connolly would be commander-in-chief of the Defence Forces, with access to all their intelligence files on internal subversion. We know how seriously she takes such responsibilities: she invited Ursula Shannon – a former member of the republican group Éirígí who served four-and-a-half years in prison after being convicted, by the Special Criminal Court, of unlawful possession of firearms – to be a member of her staff. This during a time when Shannon was under surveillance by Garda anti-terrorism officers.
