Everything we know so far about M6 crash as motorway remains closed

The M6 remains closed just outside Greater Manchester following a serious crash on Sunday night (October 26).
The carriageway is shut to traffic in both directions between Junction 27 (Standish) and Junction 28 (Leyland).
The closure was first reported shortly before 10pm, with Lancashire Police confirming two vehicles are believed to be involved.
Diversion routes are in this place tonight, and the motorway is expected to remain shut for several hours.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “You may be aware that the M6 is closed between J27 (Standish) and J28 (Leyland) due to a collision. The road is set to be closed for some time, and we ask that you find an alternative route.
“Whilst we are still in the very early stages of our attendance, we do want to let you know what we can.
“The collision is reported to involve two vehicles and is reported to have happened near to Charnock Richard services on the Southbound carriageway.
“Emergency services, are currently at the scene, where people are being treated.
“An investigation into how the collision occurred will commence, and whilst we understand that this may cause some discussion in the local community, we do ask that you please refrain from speculating online or otherwise. When we are able to provide you with more detail, we will bring you an update.
“We know that some of you may be stuck in the traffic caused by this road closure and that it may be frustrating to have your journey changed or delayed. We ask that you please be patient and allow our officers and colleagues to work to resume normality as soon as we can.
“If you have information or footage to assist our enquiries, please call 101 quoting log 1162 of 26th October.”
A National Highways spokesperson said: “The M6 is closed in both directions between J28 and J27 following a serious collision.
“Lancashire Police, emergency services and National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene.
“Traffic within the southbound closure is being released from the rear of the queue.
“Screens have been requested to scene for the northbound carriageway and once installed traffic within the closure will be released past the scene.”
