Liverpool vs Crystal Palace preview
Not worrying too much about the EFL Cup is a luxury afforded to Premier League managers when things are going well.
For Liverpool’s Arne Slot, however, Wednesday’s fourth-round tie against Crystal Palace has increased in importance after a shocking run of five defeats in six matches.
The champions’ four-game losing streak in the league started with a 2-1 defeat at Palace in late September.
And, much like a butterfly flapping its wings on the other side of the world, Eddie Nketiah scoring a 97th-minute winner at Selhurst Park has had alarming consequences on Merseyside.
The Reds conceded another injury-time goal to lose 2-1 at Chelsea and paid the price for their poor finishing in a 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United.

However, there were no excuses for Saturday’s 3-2 loss at Brentford and the champions may struggle to bounce back against Palace, who are something of a bogey team for the Reds.
The Eagles have avoided defeat on each of their last three league visits to Anfield and beat Liverpool on penalties after a 2-2 draw in August’s Community Shield at Wembley.
The FA Cup winners extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 19 matches before an unfortunate 2-1 loss at Everton.
They arrive at Anfield winless in four games although they could easily have beaten Bournemouth, who drew 3-3 at Selhurst, and AEK Larnaca, who pulled off a Louvre-style heist in last week’s 1-0 Conference League win.
Palace started brightly in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at title favourites Arsenal and Oliver Glasner named a strong side, including captain Marc Guehi and star striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, for their third-round tie against Millwall.
Liverpool’s failure to complete the signing of Guehi in the summer transfer window looks increasingly costly.
Since a 1-0 win at Burnley in mid-September, the Reds have gone nine games without a clean sheet – including the loss at Palace, when they dominated possession but had only four shots on target to their hosts’ seven.
Creative Chiesa could shine on rare start
Team news will be crucial at Anfield as Liverpool have injury problems and workload issues with big games against Aston Villa, Real Madrid and Manchester City coming up in the next two weeks.
Winger Federico Chiesa, who scored in last season’s EFL Cup final defeat to Newcastle and this term’s loss at Palace, should start for the Reds. He set up both goals in the third-round win over Southampton and claimed another assist in the defeat to Manchester United.

Hughes may make his presence felt early on
Palace are also likely to shuffle their pack and combative midfielder Will Hughes looks a big price to receive the first card.
He picked up 11 bookings in 2,122 minutes of Premier League action last season and has been cautioned four times in six domestic starts this term.

Both teams to score
Crystal Palace failed to break down Arsenal’s defence on Sunday but their last three meetings with Liverpool ended 1-1, 2-2 and 2-1 to the Eagles.
Federico Chiesa to have two or more shots
The Italy winger has scored twice in just 110 minutes of Premier League playing time this season and had four shots in Liverpool’s EFL Cup win over Southampton.
Will Hughes to be shown a card
The Palace enforcer was booked against Millwall in the previous round and has picked up a yellow card in three of his last four away games.
