Call for Urgent Rehabilitation of Kano-Kari Highway to Relieve Commuter Hardships

On Tuesday 28th October 2025, a group of lawmakers, including Hon. Yusuf Shitu Galambi and Hon. Yusuf Rabi’u, have raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of the Kano-Kari Highway, a vital road linking key towns across Kano, Jigawa, and Bauchi States. The highway, which passes through the Wudil, Garko, Sumaila, and Takai Local Government Areas in Kano State, as well as Birnin Kudu and Gwaram in Jigawa and Shira, Giade, and Misau in Bauchi, plays a crucial role in facilitating the movement of goods and people in Northern Nigeria.

In 1999, the Federal Executive Council recognized the urgent need for rehabilitation, approving a comprehensive project aimed at restoring the highway’s functionality. However, despite this approval, commuters continue to face significant challenges due to the road’s poor condition. The ongoing dilapidation is resulting in severe traffic disruptions that adversely affect socio-economic activities in the surrounding areas.

Local agrarians, who rely on the highway to transport their farm produce and livestock to markets, are particularly impacted. As the road’s condition worsens, the vibrancy of weekly markets in affected towns is diminishing, threatening local economies. Moreover, the deteriorating infrastructure has been linked to rising criminal activities, including robbery, further compounding safety concerns for those who traverse the highway.

Lawmakers express that the continued neglect of the Kano-Kari Highway not only hampers revenue generation for farmers and the government but also poses risks to public safety. In response to these issues, they are urging the Federal Ministry of Works to prioritize the complete rehabilitation of the highway. Additionally, they are calling on the Ecological Office of the Federation to address specific failed sections of the road in Sara, Jigawa State.

The House has mandated the Committees on Legislative Compliance and Works to monitor the situation and ensure that action is taken to restore this critical infrastructure, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for commuters and residents in the region.
