Iceland lead Azerbaijan 1–0 in Baku World Cup qualifier
Azerbaijan are hosting Iceland in their 2026 FIFA World Cup European Qualifying match at the Neftci Arena in Baku on 13 November.
Iceland opened the scoring in the 20th minute through Albert Gudmundsson, assisted by Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson, before Sverrir Ingi Ingason doubled the lead in the 39th minute.
The match, officiated by Montenegrin referee Nikola Dabanović, kicked off at 21:00 local time (GMT+4). Both sides created opportunities, but Iceland’s early goals proved decisive as Azerbaijan pushed to find a response.
Head coach Aykhan Abbasov selected Aydın Bayramov in goal, with defenders Bəhlul Mustafazadə, Anton Krivotsyuk and Abbas Hüseynov. Captain Emin Mahmudov and Abdulah Khaybulayev controlled the midfield, while Toral Bayramov, Nəriman Axundzadə and Xəyal Əliyev led the attack.
Iceland relied on Albert Gudmundsson, Hakon Arnar Haraldsson and Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson to drive their offensive play, while Ingason’s header added a second crucial goal before half-time.
This fixture is part of Group D, where France and Ukraine are also competing, with France hosting Ukraine later in the evening.
