Why the nation’s northernmost town won’t see sunrise for two months

The nation’s northernmost town — Utqiagvik, Alaska — is about to descend into months of darkness. The sun was slated to set at 1:36 p.m. Tuesday, and it won’t return until Jan. 22.

Utqiagvik, formerly known as Barrow, has a population just shy of 5,000 people. It’s the country’s northernmost town, situated along Alaska’s North Slope on the Arctic Ocean.
