Top Dem sparks laughter by trolling Trump official who shot her dog

U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) mocked Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem by proposing a new name for GOP-led legislation targeting immigrants who attack dogs.

During a House committee meeting on Tuesday, Goldman proposed a name change for GOP legislation that aims to deport immigrants who have attacked dogs. He suggested changing the name of the bill to the “The Kristi Noem Canine Relief Act,” referring to Noem’s admission that she shot and killed her dog, Cricket.

Laughter from other people could be heard as he introduced the motion to the committee.

“I really want to know how, if at all, it would apply to Cabinet members who have admitted that they have shot and killed a dog. Only at the ports of entry? Or is this just broadly against any assault on dogs? Because my understanding, if I’m reading the bill, is that this would apply to someone who kills a dog,” Goldman said.

He said the renaming of the legislation would “capture the true essence of the bill, which is that we really don’t want anybody to kill dogs, especially the Secretary of Homeland Security.”

U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) also joined Goldman in mocking Noem, who described her decision to kill her 14-month-old dog in her book, “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward.” She has since defended her decision to kill her dog and share it with the public.

Moskowitz read an excerpt from Noem’s book about her shooting her dog before calling on lawmakers to condemn all animal cruelty.

“We can debate the merits of the bill, but if we’re just going to get on our high horse about animal cruelty, which I think we all agree on, by the way, I think there’s unanimity here on animal cruelty, I just, you know, want to make sure that we apply that universally,” Moskowitz said.

“And I think that’s what the gentleman in New York is just trying to remind our colleagues who we have not seen in a while, that you know, the Secretary of Homeland Security also did not treat an animal in which we believe the animal should be treated,” he added.

The Democrats of the House Homeland Security Committee tweeted “#JusticeForCricket” after Goldman’s and Moskowitz’s comments.
