Nursing care staff represented by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees served strike notice Wednesday morning.
In an update posted on the AUPE website, the union said it served notice at 7:55 a.m., stating that mediation was not successful and the union did not receive recommendations from the mediator.
“The employer’s offer is simply not good enough, especially when it comes to our wages,” reads the update.
The strike notice comes after it was announced earlier this month that 98 per cent of staff represented by the union had voted in favour of strike action.
AUPE said earlier this month that talks with its employer, Alberta Health Services, and the four organizations that replaced the former provincial health authority, broke down in April.
The union has about 16,000 members, who are mostly licensed practical nurses and health care aides.
AUPE is set to hold a news conference Wednesday morning.
In a statement Monday night, the province urged AUPE to return to the bargaining table and strike a deal.
The union says it remains hopeful a settlement can be reached.
