Ruby Wax has spoken candidly about her difficult upbringing, which she says is what made her funny. The comedian is currently starring on ITV’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here where she has found an unlikely friendship with rapper Aitch and streamer Angry Ginge.

Whilst on Jamie Laing’s Great Company podcast, the star opened up about her “tortuous” relationship with her parents. The presenter said that she became a comedian so could escape and people would “save” her from her home life.

Jamie said: “But you loved your parents, right?”

To which Ruby replied: “No I didn’t. I do in a primal way, the way an animal does, but I didn’t really know who they were. I’m sure they were charming when they were young, and my mother was the most beautiful woman in Vienna.” For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter.

The host then asked if it upset her that she didn’t have a close bond with her parents, which Ruby promptly said “No.”

She then joked: “Because when they die, you’re not really that upset.”

Ruby continued: “They were torturous, both of them. In my mother innocently and in my dad on purpose, you know he’d play mind games.

“He’d take me to the bank and rattle some papers downstairs going ‘boy are you rich.’

“It turned out that I wasn’t at all, but he kept me at home until I was in my late thirties. I thought we were really rich, and every time he’d do something vicious I’d write down a number saying he owes me this much. If there was a beating I charged a lot.”

Ruby went on to share that he’d constantly put her down, he once said: “Oh boy are you a sad sack, who’s going to marry you.”

The comedian added: “Even when I did well, he’d say ‘I saw you in the Royal Shakespeare Company your teeth were so shiny.’

“If I was another kid and I was really successful and I was a boy, maybe we would have had a great relationship.”

Jamie then asked if she thinks that her relationship with her father was a result of being a girl.

To which Ruby said: “I think that Trump hates women and I think my dad did too.”

The host concluded this part of the discussion by saying, “you’re an only child and you didn’t feel the love from your parents so to be seen you had to become loud.”

The comedian added: “And funny. Not to them but to other people, so they’d save me. So, I made more and more friends, it was like a human igloo to keep them at bay.”
