Small Magnitude 3.4 Quake Hits 7 Miles South of Penticton, Canada Late at Night

An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred late at night on Thursday, November 27th, 2025, at 11:19 pm local time near Penticton, Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, British Columbia, Canada, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 2.4 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kaleden (pop. 1,200) located 2 miles from the epicenter, Okanagan Falls (pop. 2,300) 3 miles away, and Penticton (pop. 33,800) 7 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Oliver (pop. 5,100) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Naramata (pop. 1,600) 14 miles away, Summerland (pop. 11,600) 15 miles away, and Osoyoos (pop. 5,600) 25 miles away. In West Kelowna (pop. 28,800, 33 miles away), and Kelowna (pop. 144,600, 34 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
