The smart shopper’s guide to bulk buying on Black Friday

It’s estimated the supplements market will be worth a huge $9.65bn (£7.7bn) by 2033, rising from $4.79bn (£3.8bn) in 2024.
But before you load up your virtual trolley with reduced bags of caramel-flavoured protein powder or jars of vitamin gummies, Sherman says there are three questions you should ask yourself: “Do I realistically use this product regularly? Will it last until I need it? Do I like it enough to use for a year?” If you answer no to any of these, it’s unlikely you’ll make a saving.
However, Black Friday has thrown up some tempting deals. Sports nutrition brand Grenade is selling packs of 12 protein bars for £17.55, down from £27. A bar a day for 12 months would require 31 boxes, costing you £544. Do consider whether your enthusiasm for these will be the same in a year’s time, though.
For smoothies, The Protein Works Collagen Whey Protein is half price at £12.99. Each 450g bag makes 15 shakes, so for the year, expect to pay £312. Double that if there are two of you.
It’s a good deal if protein powder is a daily ritual, as an open bag usually needs to be used up within six to 12 months.
Vitamins and minerals are also a Black Friday favourite. “Check use-by dates on the manufacturer’s website to ensure that it won’t lose its effectiveness over time,” adds Hunter.
Holland & Barrett’s pack of 90 Magnesium Tablets is £6, down from £9.25 if you buy three packs. Over a year, that’s a £12 saving per person. Worth it, if you’re certain you’ll keep taking it.
But Hunter warns: “Your needs might change based on blood tests, lifestyle changes or medical advice, so you could end up with a lot of wasted product.”
Verdict: If you’re a stickler for routine and remain consistent with your daily supplement habits, then a year’s worth of bulk buying is worth it. Otherwise, keep your buys small.
