Families can watch Zootropolis 2 for free as community project celebrates milestone

A community cinema project in Bury St Edmunds is preparing to host its 10th free screening next week.

Bury Film Group CIC will mark the milestone by showing Zootropolis 2 at Cineworld, in Bury St Edmunds.

Tom Howard, director and founder of the group, initially organised a single screening in 2023 to support residents facing financial pressures and to create a more accessible cinema experience for people with disabilities.

“What began as a one-off idea has grown because people needed it,” said Mr Howard.

“Free and accessible cinema has allowed families, disabled people and those facing financial challenges to enjoy something they often miss out on.

“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped the group reach this tenth screening.”

Since it started, around 750 people have benefited from the work of Bury Film CIC.

Free community screenings have taken place across all the cinemas in Bury.

Several of the events were specifically adapted to support autistic attendees and others that benefit from a relaxed environment.

Supermarkets, businesses, and councillors have supported the initiative through donations and grant funding, ensuring all screenings remain free for residents.

Cllr Rowena Lindberg, from West Suffolk Council, said: “I was happy to have contributed to the funding. Cinema, as both art and culture, deserves to be accessible and inclusive for everyone.”

The free screening of Zootropolis 2, will take place at Cineworld, Bury St Edmunds, on Thursday, December 11, starting at 6pm.
