Ruturaj Gaikwad is playing as a No. 4 batter for India in the ongoing second ODI against South Africa at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, and he needed 52 balls on Wednesday (November 3) to complete his half-century. The right-handed batter has hammered four fours and one six so far for the KL Rahul-led side and has added 96 runs so far for the third wicket with Virat Kohli, who also completed his 76th fifty in the 25th over of the Indian innings.
The half-century by Gaikwad on Wednesday is his second 50 in ODIs for India and his first since September 22, 2023. In that match played against Australia at PCA Stadium in Mohali, Gaikwad had scored 71 runs from 77 balls as an opening batter for the KL Rahul-led side in the 277-run chase.
After ending an 803-day-long wait for his second 50+ score in ODIs, Gaikwad would like to convert his half-century into a big score and help India post a big total in the ongoing match.
Silenced his critics
Gaikwad batted at No. 4 for India in the series opener as well but was only able to score 8 runs. After his flop show with the bat in Ranchi, many fans and experts of the game questioned his selection in the playing XI as a No. 4 batter, but with his impactful knock in the second match, he has silenced his critics.
Like the first ODI, Gaikwad walked out to bat at No. 4 in the second ODI as well and completed his half-century before Kohli.
Jaiswal disappoints
In the absence of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal is playing as an opening batter for India in the ongoing series, but for the second match in a row, he failed to live up to the expectations. Like the first ODI, Jaiswal opened his account with a first-ball four in Raipur, but he then struggled to score runs. He was sent back to the pavilion by Marco Jansen on the fourth ball of the 10th over of India’s innings. Before returning back to the dugout, Jaiswal faced 38 balls and, with the help of two fours and one six, scored 22 runs.
