Oilers have interest in Tristan Jarry, but it’s complicated

The Edmonton Oilers could be bringing in some help to address their goaltending woes.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported during the Saturday Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada that the Oilers are looking at making a deal for Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry.

“I do think there’s legitimate Edmonton interest in Jarry, but I think it’s extremely complicated, and might not be possible,” Friedman explained. “Mainly because Pittsburgh has indicated it will not retain (any salary).”

Jarry has two more years left on his current contract, owed $5.375 million.

As for Edmonton’s back-stopping unit, it has been among the worst in the NHL this season — 29th in goals against average (3.50) and 30th in save percentage (.876).

All of which has taken a toll on the back-to-back Stanley Cup finalists, as the Oilers have sauntered to a 12-11-5 record and fourth in the Pacific Division.

Jarry would represent a major influx of talent between the pipes as the 30-year-old holds a 9-2-0 record with the Penguins this season, posting a 2.61 GAA and .913 save percentage (18th in the NHL).

“It might not be possible because Edmonton would have to do some roster surgery to get it done, and right now, because of their own injury and cap situation, (the Oilers) are really stuck.”

The veteran has split reps with Arturs Silovs, as both have made 12 appearances in Pittsburgh’s net this season, while the team has gotten off to a solid 14-7-5 start.

As for the Oilers’ current goalie situation, Friedman did add that Edmonton would want to keep Stuart Skinner around — 9-8-3 this season with a 2.90 GAA and .888 save percentage — and form somewhat of a tandem with him and Jarry.
