Tom Hanks’ Best WW2 Movie Is the Ultimate Streaming Sensation

It’s only been a few years since Tom Hanks starred in his last WWII movie, Greyhound, but his greatest outing in the genre is rolling over its streaming competition. Nearly 30 years ago, Tom Hanks teamed up with other stars such as Matt Damon and Tom Sizemore for Saving Private Ryan, the WWII masterpiece following a group of U.S. Soldiers who go deep behind enemy lines to deliver a tough piece of news to a fellow paratrooper. Saving Private Ryan is streaming on Paramount+ and Pluto TV in America, but the film is also in the global top 10 on various VOD and streaming platforms.
Saving Private Ryan is one of the original streaming hits — from the time streaming services were first even offered, it’s one of those movies that people look to see how they can watch. This is understandable, considering it’s hailed as not just one of the best WWII movies ever, but possibly one of the best movies of all time. It holds strong ratings of 94% from critics and 95% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it was a colossal success at the box office, grossing nearly $500 million globally against a $70 million budget.
Robert Rodat wrote the screenplay for Saving Private Ryan and Steven Spielberg directed the film. For Spielberg, Saving Private Ryan came right after the Jurassic Park sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, but four years before he teamed up with Tom Cruise for Minority Report. Spielberg most recently directed The Fabelmans, the 2022 coming-of-age drama starring Paul Dano and Seth Rogen. His next movie, The Dish, is scheduled to be released next year on June 12, 2026.
When Does Tom Hanks’ Next Movie Come Out?
Tom Hanks’ next movie will be released in theaters on June 19, 2026, one week after Steven Spielberg’s new movie comes out. Hanks will reprise his role as Woody alongside Tim Allen in Toy Story 5. Hanks is also writing a new Greyhound sequel for Apple TV that he’s attached to star in, but there have been few updates since the project was confirmed to be in development. Hanks recently reunited with his Forrest Gump team, Robin Wright and Robert Zemeckis, for Here, the box office flop that’s now streaming on Netflix.
