No. 20 Terriers Head to No. 11 Northeastern Saturday for Final Game at Matthews Arena

The No. 20 Boston University men’s ice hockey team will continue its 104th season on Saturday when the Terriers travel to No. 11 Northeastern for the final game at historic Matthews Arena. Puck drop on NESN and ESPN+ is scheduled for 7 p.m. In addition, an audio-only broadcast for both games will be located here.

Legendary Terrier head coach Jack Parker will join fellow Hockey Hall of Famer and Northeastern alumnus David Poile for a ceremonial puck drop prior to the game. 

AN IMPORTANT PART OF BU HISTORY

  • The Terriers called Boston Arena (now Matthews Arena) home from 1918-1971 before moving into Walter Brown Arena.
  • BU went 306-158-11 during that time frame and are 346-177-19 at Matthews Arena all-time.
  • The Terriers’ first win in program history came at Boston Arena on Jan. 11, 1923, when they defeated the Massachusetts Agricultural College (now UMass), 6-1.
  • BU posted a 15-0-0 record at Boston Arena during the 1970-71 season en route to winning the program’s first national title.

TERRIER TIDBITS

  • The Terriers enter Saturday having won three of their last four games, including a weekend split with Vermont on Dec. 5-6 at Agganis Arena.
  • BU took Friday’s game, 2-1, thanks to goals by sophomore Kamil Bednarik and freshman Charlie Trethewey, with Trethewey’s first collegiate goal proving to be the game-winner.
  • Junior Jack Harvey assisted on both those goals while sophomores Sacha Boisvert and Cole Hutson added one assist apiece.
  • Sophomore Mikhail Yegorov made 25 saves in a sharp performance on Friday.
  • In Saturday’s 3-2 loss, BU twice erased one-goal deficits thanks to tallies by sophomores Cole Eiserman and Nick Roukounakis.
  • Junior captain Gavin McCarthy assisted on both goals while Hutson and freshman Jonathan Morello also chipped in one assist apiece.
  • The Terriers went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill in Friday’s win, with neither team taking a penalty on Saturday.
  • BU is 12-for-13 on the PK over its last five games.
  • The Terriers are third in the nation and first in Hockey East with six shorthanded goals this season, just one behind national leaders Michigan and St. Thomas.
  • Hutson leads all NCAA defensemen with 20 points (7g, 13a), including three game-winning goals, entering this weekend.
  • Sophomore Sascha Boumedienne has been named to Sweden’s roster for the 2026 World Junior Championship while Bednarik, Eiserman and Hutson were all named to the U.S. National Junior Team preliminary roster.

HISTORY WITH NORTHEASTERN

  • This will be the 257th meeting between the Terriers and Huskies since they first met during the 1930-31 season.
  • The only team BU has played more games against is Boston College (294).
  • BU holds a 173-71-12 (.699) advantage over the Huskies, including an 82-32-7 edge at Matthews.
  • The Terriers have recorded 16 of the 21 shutouts between the crosstown rivals, with their most recent one coming in the 2022 Beanpot title game.
  • Last season marked the first time the two teams only met twice since the 2013-14 season.

LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE HUSKIES

  • BU salvaged a weekend split with Northeastern on Nov. 22 thanks to a 4-3 overtime win at Agganis Arena.
  • Sophomore Cole Hutson scored his second goal of the night at 4:08 of OT while freshman Jonathan Morello notched a shorthanded goal and junior Jack Harvey scored on the power play.
  • Sophomore Sascha Boumedienne and junior Gavin McCarthy had two helpers apiece while sophomore Mikhail Yegorov made 23 saves.
  • The Terriers outshot the Huskies, 47-26.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES

  • Northeastern most recently split a weekend series with UMass at Matthews Arena, earning a 3-2 overtime win on Saturday before falling, 2-0, on Sunday.
  • Junior Dylan Hryckowian leads the Huskies with nine goals and is second on the squad with nine assists.
  • His 18 points paces the team, with freshman Jacob Mathieu second on the squad with 17 points thanks to a team-best 13 assists.
  • Junior goaltender Lawton Zacher has started all 12 of his appearances, posting a 1.75 goals-against average and a .941 save percentage.
  • Zacher ranks second in the nation in save percentage.
  • BU did not face Zacher in November, as sophomore Quintin Sigurdson made two of his three starts this season against the Terriers.
  • Sigurdson made 32 saves in the Huskies’ 3-2 win at Matthews and turned aside 43 shots in the overtime loss at Agganis.
