Netflix Surprisingly Cancels Fan-Favorite Comedy-Drama Series After One Season

Netflix has not been shy when it comes to giving shows the axe, and it appears the streamer has done it once again. This time, the streaming giant has surprisingly canceled a highly-rated and fan-favorite comedy-drama after just one season.

“Boots” made its debut on Netflix on Oct. 9 and became an instant hit. After the first week of the series’ release drew a reported 4.5 million viewers, it doubled that number in its second week, becoming the No. 2 show on the platform.

Per a report from The Wrap, “Boots” secured 9.4 million viewers during the week of Oct. 13.

The series is based on the memoir “The Pink Marine” by Greg Cope White. The series follows a fictionalized version of Greg White, as Cope (Miles Heizer), who joins the Marine Corps as a closeted gay man. Following his best friend, Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), Cope deals with persecution during a time when being gay in the military was illegal in the 1990s.

One of the biggest changes from the book to the series is that the series takes place in the 1990s, and the book in 1979.

“Boots” became an instant hit, and was even bigger in pop culture. Apart from the high streaming numbers, the series also had some strong reviews. The series has an equal 90 percent critic and audience approval rating on Rotten Tomaotes.

Despite the makings of what could have been a further streaming hit, “Boots” has been canceled by Netflix after just one season, per a report from Deadline.

Despite Netflix meeting with Sony Studios regarding the numbers and the chances of extending the series, that will not be the case. Many of the stars from the series also had their contract options picked up, including series star Miles Heizer, Liam Oh, Kieron Moore, Dominic Goodman, Angus O’Brien, Blake Burt and Rico Paris.

To be fair, the series did end in a way that may not have indicated a second season was needed, but there was hope, considering the way the series was received.

What makes matters worse is the report from Deadline also indicates the way Netflix sets up its deals for shows, a canceled show also has little to no chance of being shopped to another streamer.

It appears that “Boots” will not get a continuation. There could be a movie made down the road, but this is just speculation at this time.
