Why Blue Jays pulled Max Scherzer before facing Shohei Ohtani

Max Scherzer gave the Toronto Blue Jays everything he had.

The 41-year old future Hall of Fame pitcher started Game 7 of the World Series on Saturday night.

He went 4.1 innings, allowing one run and striking out three. When he was pulled, he was responsible for the runner on first.

Why did the Blue Jays pull Max Scherzer?

The Blue Jays pulled Scherzer before he faced Shohei Ohtani a third time.

Scherzer allowed a one-out single in the top of the fifth to Miguel Rojas, and John Schneider came out for the change.

The expectation was that Mason Fluharty, a lefty, would come in to see Ohtani.

Instead, the Dodgers went with Louis Varland.

He had only faced Ohtani once in the series, something that the Blue Jays probably liked about the matchup.

But he left a breaking ball up to Ohtani, who pulled a single through the right side to make it two guys on with just one out.

Varland had some work to do, and all Scherzer could do was watch.
