Amid Carlos Alcaraz-Jannik Sinner Dominance, Coco Gauff Makes Her Position Clear on More Grand Slam Champions in Women’s Tennis

Coco Gauff shared her perspective on women’s tennis at the 2025 WTA Finals press conference in Riyadh. The American champion offered candid thoughts on the season and rivalries shaping professional tennis.
Coco Gauff Discusses Women’s Tennis Depth at WTA Finals
The 2025 WTA Finals started on November 1 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with Gauff as defending champion. The 21-year-old won the tournament last year in dramatic fashion, defeating Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2). If she wins again this year, Gauff would join Serena Williams as only the second player to win back-to-back WTA Finals titles since 2014.
At the press conference, Gauff talked about the different champions in women’s tennis. Four different players won the 2025 Grand Slams: Madison Keys took the Australian Open, Gauff won the French Open, Iga Świątek claimed Wimbledon, and Aryna Sabalenka captured the US Open.
“I think it’s great that there are four different champions, because all the girls have had a very competitive season throughout the year,” Gauff explained. “That makes the sport more exciting, with multiple possibilities and so many things can happen.”
When asked about men’s tennis, Gauff gave her take on the Carlos Alcaraz-Jannik Sinner rivalry. She compared it to what’s happening on the women’s side and made her case for variety.
“In the case of Carlos and Jannik, although they’re both doing very well, it’s said that it would be good to have a third contender to make it even more interesting,” she noted. “Personally, I think it’s better to have several champions at the same time, although I don’t want that to diminish their rivalry.”

Gauff wasn’t taking shots at their work. “What they’re doing is also very positive and exciting for the sport,” she said. “But, as a fan looking ahead, I find it way more fun to watch a semifinal or a quarterfinal without knowing who will win.”
Gauff’s Remarkable 2025 Season
Gauff has had a remarkable 2025 season. She won her second Grand Slam at Roland Garros, defeating World No. 1 Sabalenka. Before arriving in Riyadh, the American also claimed the Wuhan Open title in October by beating Jessica Pegula in the final. That victory made history, Gauff became the first player ever to win her opening nine hard court finals.
She started the 2025 season strongly, reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open. When the clay season came around, she reached finals in Madrid and Rome before claiming the French Open. After rough tournaments at Wimbledon and the US Open, she bounced back during Asia’s hard court swing, winning nine of ten matches before getting the Wuhan title.
