Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt out for the season, head coach says

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily/AP) — Arizona State was dealt a huge blow Friday, as starting quarterback Sam Leavitt was confirmed be out for the rest of the season.
During an interview on the Bickley and Marotta Show on Friday, head coach Kenny Dillingham announced that Leavitt will have season-ending surgery to take care “of a lingering issue.” More details about Leavitt’s injury have not been disclosed.
Leavitt went out after taking a hard hit in the first quarter of the Sun Devils’ 24-16 loss to the Cougars last Saturday. He returned to the game but went off limping in the fourth quarter.
Leavitt was in a walking boot at Arizona State’s practice Tuesday. He first injured his foot against Baylor on Sept. 20 and didn’t play in a loss to No. 24 Utah two weeks later. He returned to lead Arizona State’s comeback win over No. 7 Texas Tech on Oct. 18 before going down again.
This season, Leavitt has thrown for over 1,600 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The Sun Devils have dealt with lingering injuries on the roster this season. Star wide receiver Jordyn Tyson has sat out due to a hamstring injury. Tyson sustained the injury in the Sun Devil’s win over Texas Tech.
ASU will travel to Iowa State on Saturday for a Big 12 title game rematch. Kick-off is at 10 a.m.
