Cowan, 20, appeared in 10 games this season, recording a goal and four points.
The 6-foot winger last appeared during the team’s 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday and was skating with the scratches during their skates on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Cowan was drafted 28th overall by the Maple Leafs in 2023 and helped lead the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights to a Memorial Cup championship last season, winning tournament MVP.
The Maple Leafs activated Scott Laughton off injured reserve in a corresponding move.
Laughton will be making his season debut on Wednesday against the Utah Mammoth after he missed the beginning of the season with a lower-body injury.
The 6-foot-1 centre was acquired by the Maple Leafs prior to the trade deadline last season from the Philadelphia Flyers and recorded 13 goals and 31 points in 80 games split between the Flyers and Maple Leafs.
