Some big openings, some big closures. Find out what’s happening in Shanghai’s F&B scene.
Coming Soon to Shanghai
Hikiniku To Come: Hamburger Rice via Tokyo
So far, one F&B concept has been confirmed within FUFU, the new complex on Donghu Lu. Opening this December is Hikiniku To Come, a Tokyo-born Japanese restaurant concept founded in 2020, specializing in hamburger steak over rice.
With over a dozen locations across Asia, the brand has built a loyal following for its signature charcoal-grilled hamburger steaks made from freshly ground Australian wagyu beef. Each set meal includes a choice of two or three hamburger steaks, miso soup, a raw egg, and free refills of premium Echizen rice.
The Dome: Modern Japanese rooftop on the Bund

Opening soon on the Bund is The Dome, a contemporary Japanese restaurant and lounge with a stunning rooftop space at 1 Yan’an Dong Lu. Backed by The Fellas Group, The Dome occupies the fifth and sixth floors of the corner building.
The fifth floor features the main dining room with an omakase bar, a private room, a drinks bar, and two galley terraces with a view. On the sixth floor is a split-level rooftop terrace with multiple levels for lounge seating, a bar, and a VIP space with views of the Bund. Drinks will be curated by The Fellas Group, while the food, Japanese à la carte and omakase, is courtesy of Terada-San of Chez Bulizo.
Nono’s: Chinese-Italian; Yaya’s sister restaurant
Nono’s is opening on Yongfu Lu this December. The concept is led by the Yaya’s crew (Dan Li, Mike Liu, and Andrew Moo), joined by executive chef Chris Zhu (formerly Blaz) and wine guy Franklin Chiang (Next Bottle).
Similar to Yaya’s, Nono’s will be a fusion of Italian-Chinese flavors, but with a more refined and seasonal approach. Think preserved mustard greens with spaghetti and ravioli with yanduxian. Located on the second floor, the space will channel a similar vibe to Yaya’s — dim-lit with neon signage, hip-n-youthful — with seating for 50 people. Cocktails by consultant Tommy Wong (Hope & Sesame/CMYK).
Times: Cantonese-inspired by OUD Group
Shanghai OUD Group (Bistro 11, J Boroski, YES) is opening Times on Yongkang Lu. The bistro-bar will have Cantonese-inspired cocktails and small plates of western food with Cantonese influence. Slated to open November/December.
THE RETURN: Yuyintang. Bigger. Better. Louder!
Yuyintang, the OG of OGs for live music, is being resurrected! Yuyintang, the backers of Specters, will also reopen in CPARK in Changning. The new space will be much bigger, and will have two spaces/stages for live music, each accommodating 150 and 300 people. Due for late November.
Specters to Relocate
Speaking of, punk rock dive bar Specters will be moving from Yuyuan Lu to join Yuyintang CPARK. The Yuyuan Lu location will close November 15 and reopen in the basement of the CPARK complex early December. Specters will be slightly bigger, split on two floors, plus there will be an adjoining space for community events, art shows, movie nights, etc.
Alea & Fabula
Hooha, the contemporary Ningbo restaurant housing Fabula has closed, currently under renovation.
The building will reopen very soon to provide more space to Fabula, Ningbo & Cantonese fine dining, which will be taking the second and third floors, as opposed to its previous six-seater format. The ground floor will become Alea, a new casual fine dining bistro by the same team behind Hooha. Alea soft opening from Nov 10, Fabula to open its second floor from Dec 1.
The Treasury & Madame Ching
Opening soon on Yanping Lu is The Treasury, a hidden bar inside Madame Ching, which has taken over the former Revolucion Cocktail space on the street front. The drinks are inspired by the treasures collected by Ching Shih herself, the legendary Cantonese female pirate leader, from her journeys to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Macau, and Malaysia. Headed by veteran bartender Jackie Ho — expect a modern interpretation of cocktails that spotlights Asian ingredients.
As for Madame Ching, the Cantonese tapas restaurant behind The Treasury, that’s due for December.
Now Open
Feral Banh Mi
You can now get legit banh mi sandwiches in Shanghai thanks to Feral Banh Mi, a small sandwich shop on Maoming Bei Lu in Jing’an. Feral initially began as a roving street cart back in May and finally settled into their brick and mortar last month. The bread is 100% on point.
Terroir Strong
Located in Xintiandi is Terroir Strong (壮壮), a contemporary Chinese restaurant from the team behind Bistro Strong (壮壮酒馆), a Michelin selected restaurant in Beijing.
The Shanghai restaurant aims to highlight the cuisine and produce of northwest China in a contemporary yet approachable format, with an estimated average check of ¥300 per person for food. Currently in soft opening.
Another interesting note: the venture is founded by the son of the creator of Xibei, a well-known northwestern restaurant chain with locations across China.
Yongping Li Restaurants
There’s quite a bit happening in Yongping Li. Shanghailander Cafe is now a Japanese-Chinese fusion restaurant called Kungfu in Motion. The ramen’s pretty good.
Also new is Tabani, a Russian bar and bistro, serving humble Slavic classics like goulash, borscht, draniki, and its namesake tabani, a type of thick pancake / flatbread.
Next door, Crafted has moved up to only its second floor terrace, making room on the ground floor for Jomoo Canteen, a casual Italian concept that’s also operated by the Crafted group.
Tan Sichuan Cuisine within Yu Gardens
Also, I’m not sure how many of you have been to Yu Gardens recently, but that place has changed. The main square is now populated by Arabica, Fascino, Peet’s, Shake Shack, and even a Pop Mart.
One particular new opening, Tan Sichuan Cuisine, is worth mentioning. This restaurant is backed by Chengdu’s THE BRIDGE restaurant, a Michelin-listed restaurant with celebrity chef André Chiang as consultant.
Tan’s menu has nothing to do with its famed sister restaurant — the food and style is completely different — but it’s still pretty tasty stuff. Authentic Sichuan cuisine in a tourist hotspot, for the next time you bring visitors to Shanghai.
Black Glove Reopens
Black Glove by barman Match Chan has reopened in its original location on Taikang Lu next to Tianzifang. The space remains unchanged, but the concept has been adjusted. Black Glove is still cocktails first, focusing on gins, a curated selection with infusions. Dinner is no longer, instead, there will be simple bar snacks menu.
A new addition to the lounge bar is shisha, which seems to be picking up these days in the nightlife scene, featuring high-quality tobacco with natural flavors.
Around Town
Kebabs on the Grille
A second location of Italian street food concept Ragu has opened by Suzhou Creek. There’s another location of Kebabs on the Grille in Jing’an.
Cila moved from Xuhui to Jing’an, taking residence on the ground floor of City Hotel. With the move, they’ve increased their square-footage and have added more charcoal-grilled dishes.
Hotdog place Banana Dog opened a second location near Aster on Yongyuan Lu.
Neapolitan pizzeria Mammamia has opened a branch of Che Pasta in More Than Eat on Julu Lu. Che Pasta is a sub-brand that specializes in fresh-made pastas, for dine in or to-go. There’s already one in Gubei.
Closures
The Harrods Tea Rooms Shanghai to close in 2026
Harrods is closing its Shanghai private members club The Residence and The Harrods Tea Rooms next year, following their decision to not renew their lease. Word is it’ll happen at the end of January, pending an official press release.
Maolaguo closed its Julu Lu location, Sunday’s closed mid-October after a four-month run. XIBO at Fengsheng Li on Maoming Lu closed October 8. La Creperie closed its Reel Mall location in September after 12 years of running things there. Italian eatery Limo Limo also closed.
