United entered the half-time break leading their North London opponents thanks to a Bryan Mbeumo header.

But it was De Ligt at the other end of the pitch catching some fans’ eyes as he locked down Spurs forwards Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani.

One fan said on X: “We really need to start talking about Matthijs De Ligt Consistent. Performances like this cant go unnoticed.”

Another grateful fan added: “De Ligt you have saved my club. I can’t appreciate you enough.”

While a third fan gushed: “De ligt is the most underrated defender in the league, absolute MONSTER.”

The Dutchman arrived from German giants Bayern Munich in 2024.

Despite his relatively young age, he had already put together an illustrious career that included spells with Ajax and Juventus.

But it has been far from smooth sailing for the 6ft 2in defender since arriving at Old Trafford.

He struggled in the heart of United’s dysfunctional defence during their nightmare previous season.

English legend Michael Owen even went as far as to say he and his fellow defenders did ‘nothing’ at the base of their United side.

He said in February: “What frustrates me more than anything about the Manchester United team is that those centre-halves do nothing during the game.

“They hardly pick up any players at all, yet when you ask them to do one job – stop the guy who’s shooting – they’re sleeping at that as well.”

And on top of the intense criticism, De Ligt would pick up an injury that saw him miss the final eight games of last season.

But it is clear that he has come back stronger this year, having strung together a series of strong performances as the Red Devils stormed to wins in three of their last four games.

Clearly Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman agrees, havihng recalled De Ligt to the national team for November’s internationals, having snubbed him a month earlier.
