Wales’ dreadful Six Nations campaign remains fresh in the memory but, after beating Japan in July, they are targeting back-to-back victories for the first time since 2023.
That might prove tough against a talented Argentina side, however. The Pumas held their own against South Africa, New Zealand and Australia in the summer and are strong favourites for Sunday’s clash at the Principality Stadium.

Wales vs Argentina preview
The scale of the challenge ahead of new Wales head coach Steve Tandy should become abundantly clear when he takes charge of his first Test match against Argentina at the Principality Stadium.
Welsh rugby often seems to be in a state of complete euphoria or desolation and rarely spells with much in between.
Losing 18 Test matches in a row before a 31-22 win over Japan in Kobe over the summer, Tandy can hardly be expected to produce a miracle to get Wales back to the top of the northern hemisphere game overnight.
However, this autumn will be a good opportunity to see where they are at ahead of the Six Nations.
Argentina were the ones who started Wales’ 18-match losing streak with a 29-17 victory at the 2023 World Cup and the Pumas look capable of making it back-to-back wins over the Welsh for a third time in their history.
Earning big wins against New Zealand and Australia during the 2025 Rugby Championship, this is a settled and battle-hardened Pumas side.
Head coach Felipe Contepomi has kept Argentina’s traditions of a physical pack and strong set-piece but the former fly-half has perhaps added more dynamism to the backline.
With dangerous runners Mateo Carreras, Bautista Delguy and Santiago Carreras in the back three, Argentina are good value to cover the handicap and give Tandy more food for thought at the start of his tenure.
