Harry Kane names the five players in Thomas Tuchel’s England leadership group

England captain Harry Kane has revealed Thomas Tuchel has placed even more responsibility on his shoulders, encouraging him to be an even more vocal presence within the squad

England captain Harry Kane says Thomas Tuchel has given him even more responsibility as a leader. Kane has a strong working relationship with Tuchel who encourages his skipper to give team talks, be a louder voice on the pitch and in the dressing room.

Bayern Munich star Kane also revealed that Jude Bellingham is part of England’s leadership group along with Marc Guehi, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice.

Kane said: “He was the main reason why I ended up going to Bayern Munich, first and foremost. I love his energy, I love what he wanted to do and how he wanted to play. So, having that relationship from the first moment I met him sets up you on a good path.

“I think when he got the job, he very much saw me as a big leader in the group, and someone who was going to help him in many ways with some of the players, some of the staff, getting to know the culture, getting to know a lot of the good things we’d done, how to keep those moments.

“From my point of view, being a little bit older and wiser, more experienced … to try and push this group, to try and take it to the level I know we can reach. I feel like maybe there’s a bit of added responsibility on that.

“We have some newer leaders coming through, rather than some of the guys like Walks ( Kyle Walker ) and Harry Maguire, who were a big part of the leadership group in the past. We’ve got new ones like Marc and Jude and Bukayo, Dec obviously.

“So maybe just a bit more added responsibility to help those guys and to lead by example in that way. I just feel in a good moment.

“Always when you’re in good form yourself and you’re feeling confident, that gives you more expression to be a bit louder and be a bit more expressive in the changing-room or on the pitch.

“I always try and do it anyway but, yeah, I just think maybe the form as well that I’m in helps me to do that a little bit more as well.”

Meanwhile, Kane believes Phil Foden has all the qualities to play as a ‘false nine’ for England as Tuchel ponders him being a back-up forward next summer.

Kane added: “I think Phil has been great, coming back into the squad. He looks fresh and as though he has a great energy about him.

“He looks sharp in training and I think with someone like Phil throughout his England career there has been a lot of talk about where he should play and whether it is off the right or deeper in midfield, a 10, we played him as a left winger and obviously also as a false nine.

“I think clarity is the thing Phil probably needs and the boss needs that. The boss has made it pretty clear he sees him as one of the false nines or as a no 10.

“Phil can come and try and push his way into that position and I think sometimes as a player, that is the biggest thing, to know is ‘okay this is where the manager sees me. I will train hard, work hard and when I get minutes in the game, I will try and prove myself and work my way into the team’.

“And that is what he has done so far in this camp. The other day he looked sharp and in training he has looked really good. I think he is really excited to be back in the team and he just wants to prove a point again.”
