Tree lighting in Raleigh kicks off a season of holiday celebration around the Triangle

The holiday season kicked off Friday night in downtown Raleigh as the city’s Christmas tree lit the night sky.

It’s the first of several holiday events in the Triangle. While some were thrilled with the tree lighting, many are looking forward to another big event the following morning: The Raleigh Christmas Parade.

“I just love Christmas,” said Diane Luther, who attended the Raleigh tree lighting. “I like to do any and every kind of Christmas event there is.”

Beyond Raleigh, there will also be the lighting of Fenton Square or North Hills.

While these events are a highlight for many, it takes a lot of people behind the scenes to put them on.

For Saturday’s parade, Raleigh police are staffing up to make sure attendees stay safe and are asking them to plan ahead and stick together. Police are also asking people ot drive safely when attending a crowded event with lots of pedestrians. That way, everyone can enjoy their favorite things about the gatherings.
