Eric Dane lands poignant first TV role since ALS diagnosis

Eric Dane is making his return to TV after his ALS diagnosis.
While the “Countdown” star has been onscreen since going public with his health struggles earlier this year, his role in “Brilliant Minds” is the first project he filmed post-diagnosis.
The actor, 53, will play a firefighter named Matthew struggling to tell his family about his ALS on Monday night’s episode of the NBC show, according to People.

The outlet’s sneak peek took place in a hospital waiting room alongside Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf.
When Dane’s character said it was “always good to see” the doctor, Quinto referred to him as “Bronx Gen’s favorite silver fox.”

In addition to chatting with Quinto, the “Grey’s Anatomy” alum bantered with Nurse Nico Silva, played by Al Calderon, about a fellow firefighter who ghosted the nurse.
The clip concluded with Quinto getting Dane “in for [his] monthly check-up.”
Dane made headlines for his diagnosis in April, one month after calling off his divorce from estranged wife Rebecca Gayheart.

“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he wrote in a statement at the time. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
During his first interview two months later, he gave “Good Morning America” viewers a “sobering” update about her “right side … completely not working.”
The “Euphoria” star explained, “I have one functioning arm. My dominant side, my left side, is functioning.”
Last week, Gayheart clarified her “super complicated” dynamic with her former partner as they co-parent daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13.

“I just want to make sure I provide them with the opportunity to spend time with him, so they don’t ever look back [and wish they did more],” the actress told “Broad Ideas” listeners on Nov 17. “I really want to make sure to help facilitate that stuff for them.”
She and Dane wed in October 2004, separating in 2018 after 13 years of marriage.
Since their split, Dane has stepped out with actress Priya Jain and filmmaker Janell Shirtcliff, while Gayheart said on the podcast that she is too “stretched thin” to date.
