Newcastle vs Tottenham preview

A 2-0 home win over Tottenham at the end of October saw Newcastle book their place in the EFL Cup quarter-finals and the Magpies could repeat the trick in Tuesday’s league meeting at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe’s side recorded a first away win of the Premier League season on Saturday with an emphatic 4-1 rout of Everton, but the Toon’s home form has never been in question.

Newcastle have won six matches in a row at St James’ since a 2-1 loss to Arsenal at the end of September and have conceded only twice in that run.

That’s ominous for ailing visitors Tottenham, who limped to a third straight defeat at home to Fulham on Saturday night.

Their 2-1 loss to the Cottagers followed hot on the heels of a 4-1 hiding by Arsenal in the north London derby and a 5-3 beating at Paris St-Germain in the Champions League, displays that have thrust some unwanted attention on Spurs’ new boss Thomas Frank.

With injuries, especially in the final third, continuing to deny the Dane some key players, it is hard to see Spurs turning things around on Tyneside.

Tottenham managed only three shots and registered an expected-goals figure of just 0.07 in their last away game at Arsenal, while it took Fulham just six minutes to establish a two-goal lead at the weekend, when Spurs failed to register a single effort on target in the first half and were too wasteful after the break.

Newcastle have dominated this fixture in recent seasons, winning six of the last seven meetings, and could again boss proceedings in front of an expectant Toon Army.

Joelinton could be in Bramall’s bad books

Newcastle midfielder Joelinton has picked up eight bookings in 12 meetings with Tottenham and the Brazilian may struggle to escape the attention of referee Thomas Bramall.

Joelinton works tirelessly in the Magpies’ midfield but he can easily lose his temper and often oversteps the mark in big games, with five of his six bookings this season coming against Arsenal, Aston Villa, Barcelona, Manchester City and Tottenham.

Back Bruno to make his presence felt

Newcastle’s midfield maverick Bruno Guimaraes has had a shot in five of their six home league outings this season and he could bolster that tally in this tussle with Tottenham.

Spurs have been letting up plenty of chances on the road and Guimaraes, who has scored in home games against Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Fulham, looks to have been underestimated in the goalscorer markets.

Newcastle vs Tottenham Bet Builder

Newcastle to win

The Magpies have won six home games in a row and can account for a Spurs side who have lost their last three and were beaten 2-0 at St James’ Park in October’s EFL Cup visit.

Joelinton to be shown a card

The fiery Brazilian has picked up eight bookings in 12 meetings with Tottenham and he relishes a physical battle.

Nick Woltemade to have one or more shots on target

The German giant had two shots on target in Newcastle’s last two league matches and his 21 appearances for club and country this season have yielded nine goals.
