Chris Paul posted a cryptic message on his Instagram story shortly before his official exit from the Los Angeles Clippers.
“Just found out I’m being sent home”, he wrote on Tuesday evening, adding a peace emoji.
“We are parting ways with Chris and he will no longer be with the team. We will work with him on the next step of his career,” the Clippers president of basketball operations, Lawrence Frank, said in a statement. “Chris is a legendary Clipper who has had a historic career. I want to make one thing very clear. No one is blaming Chris for our underperformance. I accept responsibility for the record we have right now. No one is blaming Chris for our underperformance. I accept responsibility for the record we have right now. There are a lot of reasons why we’ve struggled. We’re grateful for the impact Chris has made on the franchise.”
With the story immediately becoming viral, senior NBA insider Chris Haynes explained that 40-year-old Paul was removed from the Clippers roster.
The plan for CP3 was to retire after the 2025-26 season, and he recently confirmed his intentions. However, his reunion with the Clippers has been cut short in an unprecedented move amid team struggles in the 2025-26 NBA Regular Season.
Over 16 appearances this season, Paul tallied 2.9 points, 3.3 assists, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.7 steals per contest, with the team coached by Tyronn Lue sitting 14th in the Western Conference standings behind a 5-16 record.
Widely considered a lock for a future induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the 40-year-old point guard is a veteran of 1,519 NBA games, including 149 across 15 postseason runs. Also, he was selected in 12 NBA All-Star Teams, 11 All-NBA teams, nine NBA All-Defensive Teams, and won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2006.
Back in 2005, following two NCAA seasons with Wake Forest, Paul was drafted by the New Orleans Hornets with the fourth overall pick. He also played for the San Antonio Spurs, Golden State Warriors, Phoenix Suns, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Houston Rockets, besides the Clippers and Hornets.
Representing the United States, he captured gold medals in the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games. He also won bronze in the FIBA World Championship 2006.
