Mets Lose Free Agent Pitcher to Padres

The San Diego Padres bolstered their bullpen Thursday by signing right-hander Ty Adcock to a major league contract for the 2026 season.

The value of Adcock’s one-year deal is not known.

Adcock, 28, had spent the last two seasons with the New York Mets. In 18 major league games with the Mets (2024-25) and Seattle Mariners (2023), he’s 0-0 with a 5.48 ERA.

A former eighth-round pick by the Mariners in the 2018 MLB Draft, Adcock has a 1.04 WHIP, .227 opponents’ batting average, and 19 strikeouts in 23 innings at the major league level.

Although his role is to be determined, Adcock figures to help the Padres, who are expected to lose closer Robert Suarez in free agency this winter.

The Mets outrighted Adcock to Triple-A Syracuse in August, and he elected free agency in October.

Adcock went 1-3 with a 4.66 ERA in 31 games (one start) at Syracuse in 2025. He limited International League opponents to a .197 batting average and struck out 35 batters in 36.2 innings for the Mets’ top farm team.

Adcock boasts a 97-mph fastball, offset by a slider, cutter, and occasional splitter. Although his major league experience is sporadic, Adcock might find more of an opportunity in San Diego under well-regarded pitching coach Ruben Niebla and veteran-pitcher-turned-rookie-manager Craig Stammen.

The Padres hired Stammen to replace Mike Shildt on Nov. 6.

Adcock’s professional career started slowly. He was sidelined by a right shoulder impingement after being drafted out of Elon University. He lost the 2020 season to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2021 season to Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

Undeterred, Adcock debuted in the Mariners’ system in 2022 and by 2023 was a major leaguer. He allowed only seven runs (six earned) across 15.2 innings in 12 appearances as a rookie.

The Mariners designated Adcock for assignment in April 2024 and he was quickly picked up by the Detroit Tigers. A month later, the Tigers DFA’d Adcock as well, and he joined the Mets five days later.
