Bilateral Meeting with H.E. Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed, Prime Minister of the Republic of Djibouti

Djibouti – During his working visit to Djibouti, FAO Director-General Dr QU Dongyu, was received by His Excellency Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed, Prime Minister of the Republic of Djibouti. The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Minister of Agriculture and the Permanent Representative of Djibouti to FAO.
The Prime Minister extended a warm welcome to the Director-General and expressed appreciation for his visit despite a demanding agenda. He underscored Djibouti’s significant agricultural and economic potential and reaffirmed the Government’s reliance on FAO’s continued support. Drawing on his own experience as a former Minister of Agriculture, the Prime Minister emphasized his strong personal commitment to the sector and his close coordination with the current Minister of Agriculture.
The Prime Minister highlighted several strategic needs, including FAO’s technical expertise in preparing feasibility studies, which are essential for mobilizing international financing, in particular from the Green Climate Fund (GCF). He also stressed Djibouti’s urgent need for energy solutions to support seawater desalination to expand agricultural production.
The Minister of Agriculture reiterated the importance of ongoing efforts such as the animal-feed preparation project. The Permanent Representative of Djibouti to FAO highlighted the national Hub-in-a-Hub initiative, and the work led by the Ministry of Finance to establish a public-private partnership framework.
In his remarks, the Director-General reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to supporting Djibouti through the Organizations technical and financial capabilities. In this regard, the Director-General referred to the FAO Investment Centre, co-financed by the World Bank, to facilitate FAO’s engagement with Members, and encouraged Djibouti to ensure that project proposals where aligned with FAO’s mandate, including in areas such as aquaculture development and climate-change adaptation.
The Director-General also recalled his constructive discussion with the President of the Republic of Djibouti, especially concerning the vision to transform Djibouti into a regional economic hub.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed his deep appreciation for the Director-General’s leadership and, on behalf of the President of the Republic, awarded him the Medal of the National Order of 27 June in recognition of FAO’s important contribution to Djibouti’s development.
