Eric Dane writing memoir about ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ ‘Euphoria,’ and ALS diagnosis

Eric Dane is ready to share even more about his life in his new memoir.

The book, titled “Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments,” will be released next year, covering his life and his recent ALS diagnosis.

“I wake up every morning, and I’m immediately reminded that this is real — this illness, this challenge and that’s exactly why I’m writing this book,” Dane said in a statement, per Entertainment Weekly. “I want to capture the moments that shaped me — the beautiful days, the hard ones, the ones I never took for granted — so that if nothing else, people who read it will remember what it means to live with heart. If sharing this helps someone find meaning in their own days, then my story is worth telling.”

Dane is best known for his breakout role on “Grey’s Anatomy” as Dr. Mark Sloan, aka “McSteamy,” as well as other projects like “Euphoria,” “Burlesque,” “X-Men: The Last Stand,” and “Marley & Me.”

In April of this year, he announced he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a neurological disease that damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, which worsens over time, leading to loss of muscle control and eventually paralysis.

Dane had to miss the “Grey’s Anatomy” reunion earlier this year during the Emmys due to a fall that required a hospital visit and stitches.

But the 52-year-old is doing his best to be an advocate for fellow ALS sufferers, visiting Capitol Hill in October to support the ACT for ALS law that expands access to treatments and works to support development of new therapies for ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases.

He’s also managed to continue working as well, recently making an appearance on the NBC series “Brilliant Minds,” playing a firefighter with ALS.

Dane’s memoir is being published by Maria Shriver’s The Open Field, which is an imprint of Penguin Random House.

Shriver said in a statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly, “I’m so honored to be publishing Eric’s story. It’s a courageous one that inspires me deeply,” Shriver said. “Eric wants to give his daughters and family something to be proud of, and this book will not only make them proud, but it will also help people understand what ALS is and isn’t, what happens to someone when they get it, and how we can all be compassionate partners to people suffering with neurological conditions such as this.”

“Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments” will be available next year with an exact release date to be determined.
