2 children dead after boat overturns in Lake Rossignol

Nova Scotia RCMP say two children under the age of 10 are dead after a boat capsized late Saturday on Lake Rossignol, N.S.

RCMP spokesperson Cindy Bayers said there were four people on board: a 45-year-old man and three children under the age of 10, all from Fall River, N.S.

Bayers said the RCMP does not detail the relationship between the individuals involved in the incident.

Lake Rossignol is located in Queens County in southwestern Nova Scotia.

It’s unclear what the individuals were doing before the boat overturned and what caused it to capsize.

A search and rescue operation began just before 5 p.m. AT Saturday, with RCMP, local fire departments, paramedics and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre responding, according to Bayers.

Maj. Trevor Ackland of the JRCC told CBC News in a text message that individuals were taken to hospital using a military Cormorant helicopter on the advice of paramedics at the scene.

Ackland said the patients were taken to CFB Halifax and then taken to hospital.

The two surviving individuals have non-life-threatening injuries, Bayers said.
