With the 2026 World Cup just around the corner, everyone is vying for a place in their national team to make their way to North America to take place in the finals next year.
For Manchester United, each international break sees a host of their players away from Carrington, battling it out to secure their slot in the prestigious tournament.
Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot are regulars for Portugal, whilst Patrick Dorgu holds the role of first-choice left-back for Denmark.
Elsewhere Benjamin Sesko is Slovenia’s key striker, with both Senne Lammens and Altay Bayindir in the mix as goalkeepers for Belgium and Turkey.
While Matthijs de Ligt wasn’t selected this time round for the Netherlands, the defender’s hoping he can ride United’s new winning run to get back into the squad.
Equally, both Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee have been reported as wanting to move from Old Trafford to get more game time to stand a chance of reclaiming their places in the England and Netherlands squads.
However, Ian Wright has now made a bold claim that an ex-United striker should be called up to Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
Speaking on The Overlap, Wright joined Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane and Jill Scott, with the five getting onto the topic of United and their upcoming game with Brighton.
The topic shifted to the upcoming clash after discussing United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool, giving them a major boost to head on and face The Seagulls.
However, as soon as Brighton came into the mix, Ian Wright began praising former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck, claiming he’s going to “hurt United” with his recent form.
So far this season, Welbeck’s grabbed four goals and an assist in nine games, made up of two braces against Chelsea and Newcastle.
When asked by Jill Scott if Welbeck deserves a place in Tuchel’s World Cup squad, Wright responded: “If Danny Welbeck has a season where he continues to play like that, his name will be amongst it.”
The five went on to discuss Welbeck’s previous stint with the England squad, having not been called up since 2018, however injuries ruled the striker out for a considerable time between 2015 and 2017.
Welbeck recorded 16 goals and four assists across his 42 games for England, including impressive showings in the qualifiers for the 2016 Euros with six goals and an assist in five games.
