Competition World Cup qualifying

Hungary and Ireland meet in a decisive World Cup qualifier at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on Sunday when one of the teams will see their hopes of making the finals come to an end.

For Ireland, the equation is simple – they know they must win to keep their qualification hopes alive, most likely by securing a play-off spot, although there is an unlikely scenario where they could still top Group F and reach the finals automatically.

A point is enough for Hungary to clinch a play-off spot, but a win could be enough to see them snatch top spot should group leaders Portugal slip up on home soil against Armenia.

Hungary vs Ireland preview

There is so much at stake on Sunday, and both Hungary and Ireland know they could end the match having secured an automatic place at next summer’s World Cup, clinched a play-off spot for the finals in March, or been eliminated altogether.

That may suggest that a cagey contest is on the cards but both these sides should go into the game full of confidence.

Hungary have only lost one of their five qualifiers – a 3-2 home defeat to Portugal in September – and they have scored in every game, including twice in a draw with Ireland in Dublin at the start of the group.

Ireland know if they fail to score in Budapest then their World Cup dream will be over, but they will be buoyed by Thursday’s 2-0 victory over Portugal at the Aviva Stadium.

Having also beaten Armenia last month, Ireland have now won back-to-back games, and like Hungary they have a strong scoring record, netting in four of their five qualifiers. Their only blank came in a 1-0 loss away to Portugal.

Both teams also boast a goalscorer in form. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has outscored Hungary’s Barnabas Varga in the group, and the Ferencvaros forward bagged his fourth of the campaign in Thursday’s 1-0 win in Armenia, while Troy Parrott was the hero for Ireland in the win over Portugal, scoring both goals, and at club level this season he has scored 13 times in 14 appearances for AZ Alkmaar.

With both sides in form and boasting proven goalscorers, this crucial contest should feature goals at both ends of the pitch.

In-form Parrott playing with confidence

Parrott enjoyed his best night in an Ireland shirt on Thursday and now has 15 goals for club and country this season.

The 23-year-old has managed eight shots on target in his last six games and Heimir Hallgrimsson is likely to deploy him in a central attacking role once again. He can trouble the opposition goalkeeper at least once.

Hard to separate evenly-matched pair

These two sides drew 2-2 in September’s reverse meeting in Dublin, Ireland coming from two goals down to salvage what could end up being a crucial point.

Seven of the last 14 meetings between these sides, including each of the last three on Hungarian soil, have ended level, so a draw could be on the cards, and give both teams are fancied to score, the 1-1 correct score appeals.

Ireland or draw double chance

Hungary may end up settling for a draw if Portugal are running away with things against Armenia, and with Ireland full of confidence following their victory over Cristiano Ronaldo and co, the Boys in Green can pick up a result.

Troy Parrott anytime scorer

Fresh from his brace against Portugal and with plenty of goals under his belt at club level this season. Parrott looks Ireland’s main goal threat and can continue his hot streak at the Puskas Arena.

Liam Scales to be booked

After impressing in an unfamiliar left-wing back role against Ireland, Liam Scales should keep his place for this game. The Celtic ace was booked on Thursday and has six yellow cards at club level this season.
